hidden boundaries make a garden look bigger

The garden above is 4 metres wide and 100 square metres in area yet because the boundaries are hidden it looks much larger. It is something to do with perception that if we don't see a boundary we perceive that the area is larger.

Capability Brown used a similar technique when designing his lakes. He would hide the ends of the lakes with either trees or land form giving the perception that the lake continued.
